The Colchester Medieval Festival & Oyster Fayre Market - June
Colchester’s first History Fayre of the modern era took place in 1989, and commemorated the 800th anniversary of the granting of a Royal Charter to the town in 1189.
Since then the Medieval Fayres have become a tradition, and are now famous as one of the major public events in the Eastern Counties.
The first Oyster Fayre, as an annual, event was in 2003.
Each June we stage a full medieval style fair, with many of the peripheral activities that a major annual event of the period would have offered. It remembers a time when folk from the countryside and neighbouring villages would travel to the ‘Big Fair’ in the town.
The fair is set in the period 15th to 16th century and takes place in Lower Castle Park Colchester.
Suffolk Coast Ride - July
A beautiful Summer day's cycling around the heathland, fields and coast of the Suffolk countryside. Starting and finishing at the elegant Elizabethan mansion of Glemham Hall next to A12, there’s a choice of two scenic routes of 35 & 65 miles. All routes head north through pretty countryside and villages before dividing - the short route then swings east towards Dunwich on the coast, while the longer one continues north to reach Covehithe with its curious ‘Russian Doll’ churches. Following the coast south, the long route rejoins the short route near Dunwich, crossing open heathland back to finish back at Glemham Hall where you will find massage, refreshments, live music and a bar.
Art on the Prom - September
The fourteenth annual Art on the Prom will take place on on the sea front from the pier to the Spa Gardens.
